I got the idea for this painting during a team leader meeting at school. I had brought my sketchbook with me to the meeting. Sketching or doodling often helps me concentrate. For some reason, the composition came to me during the meeting. I had been recently watching professional bull riding on TV and was thinking about how to capture the intense, violent movement and change of direction that the rider and bull experience. I decided that a Cubist approach would best accomplish my goal.
The diagonal lines, geometric forms, and abrupt changes in color and value emphasize the action. I also wanted to be a bit whimsical, so I emphasized the rider’s "quick exit" from the bull and the sign showing where the exit door is located.
